Director/Producer. For Al Jazeera's Fault Lines series, we travel to South Carolina to investigate the epidemic of domestic violence homicide, and whether weak gun laws are putting women's lives at risk. We tell the story of Zakiya Lawson, a young woman and mother killed by her ex-boyfriend, whose family spoke out against domestic violence after her death. We explore the culture of silence through the death of Marge Putnam, who was shot and killed by her husband of 38 years after she finally decided to leave him.
Through interviews with the Sheriff's Association and the president of the Gun Owners Club of South Carolina, we dive into the murky territory of federal versus state gun laws for domestic abusers while pioneering researcher Dr. Jacquelyn Campbell tells us why those laws matter. When we go undercover at a gun show, we see how easy it is to buy a handgun ourselves. And in a batterers intervention counseling group, we hear what men who have abused are struggling to be honest about and overcome.
